Each time a significant honors show nears, you'll find a clamor to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
